African Union (AU) Internship Program 2025 is a full-time, paid engagement designed to give talented young Africans practical exposure to the operations of the AU.
Open to candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, this program offers hands-on experience in continental policy, diplomacy, and development initiatives while fostering leadership potential among Africa’s youth.
The program seeks to:
- Complement participants’ education with practical, on-the-job training.
- Develop personal and professional skills to prepare future African leaders.
- Expose interns to AU operations in a multicultural, pan-African environment.
- Encourage collaboration, diversity, and cross-cultural understanding among participants.
The AU emphasizes inclusion and welcomes applicants who can work respectfully in a multinational environment while showing genuine interest in the organization’s mission.
Eligible Fields
Interns may be placed in any AU department or directorate depending on organizational needs and their academic background.
Possible placements include:
- Political Affairs, Peace & Security (PAPS)
- Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI)
- Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS)
- Infrastructure & Energy (IE)
- Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy & Sustainable Environment (ARBE)
- Women, Gender & Youth (WGY)
- Economic Development, Trade, Industry & Mining (ETIM)
- Information & Communication
- Office of the Legal Counsel (OLC)
- Partnership & Resource Mobilization
- Citizens & Diaspora (CIDO)
- Other AU directorates and support offices.
This program is open to candidates from any discipline, provided they can contribute to AU’s programs.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s program, OR hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or postgraduate qualification.
- Be a national of an AU Member State.
- Be 32 years old or younger at the time of selection.
- Be fluent in at least one AU working language: English, French, Arabic, or Portuguese.
- Possess high moral integrity with no serious criminal record.
- Show genuine interest in AU’s mission and demonstrate the ability to interact in a multicultural environment.
- Prior work experience is NOT required, making this ideal for recent graduates and young professionals.
Selection Criteria
Selection is merit-based, focusing on:
- Academic performance and potential.
- Relevance of academic background to AU departments.
- Evidence of leadership potential or commitment to African development.
- Language proficiency and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
Eligible Countries
- The program is open to young Africans from all 55 AU Member States.
Required Skills
- Proficient computer skills (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Proficiency with e-mail and internet applications,
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
- Proficiency in one of the AU officials working languages (French, English, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, Kiswahili) and fluency in another AU language(s) is an added advantage
