The Department of Archaeology, conservation and History (IAKH) is comprised of three disciplines that, in different ways, study the past.
The department has internationally oriented archaeologists, the only conservation program in Norway, and the biggest group of historians in Scandinavia.
The department has close to 100 employees, including non-permanent research fellows.
The study programs span archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, object and paintings conservation, and history from Antiquity to the present age.
The Department of Musicology teaches musicology at all levels and participates in research within a number of different fields, with a particular focus on music history and aesthetics, popular music and cultural analysis, and music cognition and technology.
The Department has approximately 50 employees, including PhD and postdoctoral students, and admits a total of 90 bachelor’s and master’s students each autumn.
RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion is financed through the Research Council of Norway’s Centre of Excellence Scheme.
RITMO combines a broad spectrum of disciplines from musicology, neuroscience, and informatics to study rhythm as a fundamental property of human cognition, behaviour, and cultural expression.
The Centre is organized under the Department of Musicology, in close collaboration with the Department of Psychology and the Department of Informatics.

#01. Postdoctoral research fellowship in the computational analysis of gesture-vocalization interactions.
- A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in the computational analysis of gesture-vocalization interactions is available in connection with the research project, SongGesture: Co-singing gesture and vocal performance across three musical traditions, funded by the Research Council of Norway.
- The project is affiliated with the RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion at the University of Oslo
- All RITMO researchers are co-located and work in a unique interdisciplinary constellation, with world-leading competence in musicology, psychology, and informatics.
- It is expected that all members of the centre contribute to the general activities and collaborations within RITMO.
- The researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities in sound/video recording, motion capture, eye tracking, physiological measurements, various types of brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), and rapid prototyping and robotics laboratories.
- Applicants are required to upload a research outline, stating research questions and theoretical and methodological approaches that will further the goals of the project.

#02. Postdoctoral research fellowship in Music and AI in the creative and cultural industries.
- A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo.
- The position is available for a period of 3 years.
- There is a 10 % component of the position that is devoted to teaching and administrative duties / other career-promoting work.
- Given additional funding and a good match with the Department’s teaching needs, the position may be extended to 4 years, including 25% teaching and administrative duties.
- The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment of both MishMash and the Department of Musicology and contribute to its development.
- The purpose of a postdoctoral position is for the employee to develop a research profile and competence that qualify them to apply for an Associate Professor position.
- The position may also provide other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral fellow’s future career.
- A career plan shall be developed for the Postdoctoral Fellow, specifying the competencies the Postdoctoral Fellow should acquire.
- UiO is responsible for following up on the career plan and ensuring that the Postdoctoral Fellow has access to career guidance throughout the postdoctoral term.
- If the Postdoctoral Fellow does not already have educational qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professor position, UiO shall facilitate the acquisition of such competence during the employment period.

#06. Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in heritage conservation.
- A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in heritage conservation is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo (UiO).
- The appointed candidate will work within the overarching goals of the POLYCHROME project.
- The project investigates evolving attitudes to devotional images that have been selectively mutilated since the Reformation, and the influence of restorers on how this heritage is interpreted today.
- Candidates should propose a research project that investigates, in one form or another, the histories of restoration of medieval panel paintings and polychrome sculptures from Scandinavian churches.
Preference will be given to independent projects devoted to one or more of these possible themes:
- Fragmented objects that were repaired, restored, and/or repainted, to prepare them for display as cultural heritage.
- Approaches to loss compensation over time, with specific attention to losses that carry cultural or historical significance.
- Relationships between historical restoration practices and antiquarian attitudes to fragments and iconoclastic damage.
- Church painters and craftspeople who are recognized for their restorations of church interiors and inventories.
- Neglect, renewal, and whitewash.
- Connections between those working with medieval material related to Christian traditions in Northern European museums and those responsible for preparing objects collected from other parts of the world.
Any of these topics might include observations of similarities and differences between sources and attitudes in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.
