OsloMet Research Stays Abroad Scholarships 2027 | Norway

Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) offers research mobility grants to support eligible doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and academic staff undertaking research stays at institutions abroad. These grants help researchers develop international academic collaborations, strengthen their research projects, exchange knowledge, and improve the quality of their doctoral or postdoctoral work.

For the 2027 research period, several OsloMet faculties have announced funding opportunities for international research stays. However, the eligibility conditions, award amounts, and application deadlines differ between faculties.

The opportunities are intended for individuals who are already employed by OsloMet or enrolled in an eligible OsloMet doctoral programme. They are not open to external international students seeking admission to a new PhD programme.

The research visit normally takes place at an international university or research institution selected in consultation with the applicant’s supervisor. Depending on the faculty, financial support may cover travel, additional living expenses, visa costs, and documented tuition fees.

Degree Level

  •   PhD, Postdoctoral Research.

Available Subjects

The research stay must be relevant to the applicant’s ongoing doctoral, postdoctoral, or research project.

Eligible academic fields depend on the applicant’s faculty and doctoral programme. Research may involve areas such as:

  • Engineering and Technology
  • Sustainability and Environmental Research
  • Innovation and Design
  • Social Sciences
  • Education and International Studies
  • Health Sciences
  • Behaviour Analysis
  • Interdisciplinary Research

Applicants should check their faculty’s research mobility guidelines to confirm the applicable academic requirements.

The research mobility grants can provide financial support for:

  • Return travel to the international host institution using the most economical travel option.
  • Additional living and establishment expenses during the research stay.
  • Public transportation to and from the airport, where covered by the relevant faculty scheme.
  • Visa expenses, where eligible.
  • Documented tuition fees charged by the host institution, subject to approval.
  • Academic collaboration and research development opportunities abroad.

The exact financial support depends on the applicant’s faculty.

For example, the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) allows applicants to request up to NOK 25,000 per month for documented additional living costs, alongside eligible travel, visa and tuition expenses.

The Faculty of Social Sciences (SAM) offers up to NOK 20,000 per month, with a maximum total grant of NOK 60,000.

These are faculty-specific funding limits, not a single university-wide scholarship amount.

Faculty-Specific Research Funding Opportunities

OsloMet has separate research mobility arrangements across its faculties. Some of the published opportunities for 2027 include:

Faculty of Social Sciences (SAM)

The Faculty of Social Sciences provides research stay grants for PhD candidates enrolled in its doctoral programme and postdoctoral fellows employed at the faculty.

  • Funding: Up to NOK 20,000 per month.

  • Research period: Spring and autumn semesters of 2027.
  • Application deadlines: 1 November 2026 for spring 2027 stays and 15 March 2027 for autumn 2027 stays.

Applicants must be employed at SAM. The research stay should contribute to international academic collaboration and the applicant’s ongoing research.

Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD)

TKD offers international mobility grants to PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows and researchers employed at the faculty.

PhD applicants must be admitted to one of the faculty’s two doctoral programmes:

  • PhD in Engineering Science (PENG).
  • PhD in Innovation for Sustainability (PINS).

For 2027 research stays, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and other eligible researchers have the same priority.

  • Duration: One to three months.
  • Application deadline: 1 November 2026 for research stays in 2027.

Eligible costs include economical return travel, additional living expenses, visa costs, and documented tuition fees.

Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI)

The Faculty of Education and International Studies provides overseas research grants for PhD candidates enrolled in its doctoral programmes.

The funding supports research activities abroad that contribute directly to the completion of the doctoral project.

  • Duration: One to three months.
  • Annual funding pool: NOK 250,000.
  • Application deadline: 31 August for research stays planned during the following calendar year.
  • Funding may cover travel, additional living expenses, visa costs, and documented tuition fees.

Applicants must contact the PhD administration at least 14 days before the application deadline for assistance with the application process.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers international mobility grants to eligible PhD candidates employed at the faculty and admitted to its PhD programme in Health Sciences or Behaviour Analysis.

The published funding arrangements include:

  • Economical return travel.
  • Additional living expenses of up to NOK 25,000 per month.
  • Eligible visa costs and documented tuition fees.
  • Research stays lasting one to three months.

The faculty’s published application deadlines are 31 August for stays between January and July of the following year and 31 January for stays between August and December of the same year.

Applicants should confirm the applicable call and deadline with the faculty before applying.

Eligible Nationalities

The research mobility opportunities are not generally restricted by nationality. However, applicants must meet the employment, doctoral enrolment and faculty-specific eligibility conditions.

International researchers and doctoral candidates may qualify if they are employed by OsloMet and meet the requirements of the relevant faculty.

Students studying at other universities, including international applicants who are not employed by or enrolled in an eligible OsloMet programme, cannot apply for these internal grants.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the requirements of their respective faculty. General conditions include:

  • Be employed by OsloMet in an eligible research, PhD, or postdoctoral position.
  • Be enrolled in the relevant OsloMet doctoral programme if applying as a PhD candidate.
  • Have an ongoing research or doctoral project that can benefit from an international research stay.
  • Identify a suitable international host institution in consultation with the academic supervisor.
  • Demonstrate how the research visit will contribute to the applicant’s academic work.
  • Ensure that the research stay is not funded twice through different schemes.
  • Meet the minimum remaining employment or doctoral period required by the relevant faculty.

Additional restrictions may apply. For example, applicants who have previously received an OsloMet mobility grant may not be eligible to receive another award under certain faculty schemes.

Applicants who qualify for a Research Council of Norway mobility grant may be required to apply through that funding scheme instead.

Required Documents

The required documents vary by faculty, but applicants may need to prepare:

  • Completed online application form or faculty application template.
  • Invitation letter from the international host institution.
  • Recommendation or support letter from the main PhD supervisor.
  • Letter of support from the personnel manager or line manager, where required.
  • Research stay dates and proposed duration.
  • Description of the host institution and its research environment.
  • Academic purpose and planned research activities.
  • Explanation of how the visit will contribute to the doctoral or research project.
  • Itemised budget covering travel and additional expenses.
  • Details of tuition fees or visa costs, if requesting reimbursement.

Some faculties also require confirmation of the applicant’s research progress and employment status.

How Winners Are Selected

Applications are reviewed according to faculty-specific procedures. Selection may consider:

  • Academic quality and relevance of the proposed research stay.
  • Contribution to the applicant’s ongoing doctoral or research project.
  • Suitability of the international host institution.
  • Opportunities for international research collaboration.
  • Research progress and feasibility of the proposed activities.
  • Availability of funding.

For the SAM faculty, applications meeting the formal requirements may be subject to a lottery if the number of applications exceeds the available funding.

For LUI, applications may be prioritised according to academic quality and relevance to the PhD project if requested funding exceeds available resources.

Application Procedure

Applicants should follow the application process established by their respective OsloMet faculty.

  • Identify the relevant faculty funding opportunity and read its eligibility requirements.
  • Discuss the proposed research visit with your PhD supervisor or academic manager.
  • Select an appropriate international host institution and research environment.
  • Obtain an invitation letter from the host institution.
  • Prepare the research plan, proposed dates, supporting documents, and estimated budget.
  • Complete the relevant faculty’s application form or contact the PhD administration for submission instructions.
  • Submit the application with all required attachments before the applicable deadline.
  • Wait for the faculty’s decision before making financial commitments.

Applicants should remember that each faculty has its own application procedure. A university-wide application should not be assumed.
