The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a reminder to the public detailing the official procedure for candidates whose certificates have been lost, burnt, or destroyed.

As part of its long-standing policy, WAEC does not reprint original certificates.

Instead, affected candidates can apply for an Attestation of Results, a fully valid document that serves the same purpose as the original certificate for school admissions, employment, and verification processes.

According to WAEC, the attestation service is available throughout Ghana via its online platform and regional offices.

How to Apply for Attestation of Results.

WAEC has outlined a simple five-step digital process for all candidates:

Visit the Official WAEC Website:

Navigate to the Certificates Section:

  • On the homepage, locate the “Certificates” menu or section that leads to certificate-related services.

Select “Attestation of Results”:

You will be required to provide:

  • Full Name (as used in the examination)
  • Index Number
  • Examination Type (BECE/WASSCE)
  • Month and Year of Examination
  • Date of Birth
  • Valid ID (Ghana Card, Passport, etc.)
  • Passport-sized photograph

After entering your details, follow the prompts to submit the request.

Pay the Processing Fee (GH¢400.00):

  • An application fee of GH¢400.00 is charged for attestation processing.
  • Payment can be made at:
  • Agricultural Development Bank (ADB)
  • GCB Bank

You may also complete payment using online WAEC payment options that are generated during the application process.

Choose a Pickup Point:

Candidates must select where they wish to collect the attestation—either:

  • WAEC Head Office, Accra, or
  • Any WAEC Regional Office across the country.

Bring along a valid ID and the payment receipt when picking up your document.

How long will it take to be processed?

WAEC notes the following timelines:

  • Accra Headquarters: Within 3 working days
  • Regional Offices: Within 5 working days

Candidates are encouraged to track their application status through the WAEC attestation portal.

Why WAEC Issues an Attestation and Not a Second Certificate?

  • WAEC maintains that original certificates are issued once, after which the Council cannot replace them if lost, destroyed, or damaged.
  • The Attestation of Results, however, carries the same authority and contains the same details as the original certificate.
