  • Bile is alkaline; hence it will turn litmus paper blue, i.e. blue litmus paper remains unchanged, whilst red litmus paper turns blue

  • Bile provides a suitable pH for protein-digesting enzymes in the duodenum

  • Bile emulsifiers, fats and oils for lipase to act on them
  • Bile provides a suitable pH for lipase to digest fats and oils.
