The Barry Goldwater Scholarship 2026 is open to:
- Undergraduate sophomores and juniors (students typically in their 2nd or 3rd year of study at a U.S. college or university).
- This scholarship is not available for graduate or high school students.

Within these fields, majors such as biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental science, and related STEM disciplines are considered eligible.
Selected Goldwater Scholars receive:

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship Competition, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a college sophomore or junior at the time of application.
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national.
- Intend to pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
- Be nominated by their Goldwater Campus Representative (self-nominations are not accepted).
- Transfer students and veterans are encouraged to apply and should work closely with their campus representatives during the nomination process.
Application Timeline for the 2026 Goldwater Scholarship
- September 2, 2025: Online application opens.
- Early September 2025: January 2026: Internal campus nomination deadlines (varies by institution).
- January 30, 2026: Final nomination deadline (5:00 PM CT).
- Late February 2026: Nomination packets reviewed.
- Mid-March 2026: Board of Trustees votes on Scholars.
- March 27, 2026 (Last Friday of March): Announcement of 2026 Scholars and Honorable Mentions.

Student sessions are scheduled on September 17, 2025, and November 5, 2025, via Zoom.
