Upper West Region sees spike in attempted suicides.
The Upper West Region has recorded a significant surge in attempted suicide cases in the first half of the year 2025.
The Region recorded 26 reported cases, comprising 3 males and 23 females. This marks a substantial increase from the 9 attempted cases reported in 2023 and 12 cases in 2024.
Unfortunately, the region also recorded one completed suicide case involving a man during this period.
Basagnia Sylvester, Regional Mental Health Officer, attributed the surge in cases to riggers, including relationship issues, depression, alcohol consumption, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse.
Sylvester said, notably, most individuals who attempted suicide fall within the youthful age range of 26 to 43 years.
This trend echoes a national concern, as Ghana recorded 543 attempted suicides and 81 completed suicides in the first half of 2024.
The Mental Health Authority emphasises that suicide is preventable and encourages individuals to seek help.
“If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, it’s essential to seek help,” he admonished.
It is estimated globally that suicide claims over 700,000 lives annually, with the Upper West included.
As September is earmarked for suicide and its related campaigns, stakeholders in the Region are worried and have declared their commitment to changing this narrative.
