The EPFL Excellence in Engineering (E3) Internship Program 2026 is now open for applications.

Hosted by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), this prestigious summer internship provides exceptional Bachelor’s and Master’s students from around the world an opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories in Switzerland.

The EPFL Excellence in Engineering (E3) Internship Program offers students an immersive research experience in one of Europe’s most advanced technological environments.

As an E3 intern, you will join a research group at EPFL, working on real-world projects under the guidance of leading professors and scientists.

Throughout the internship, you will also participate in networking events, professional workshops, and social activities organized by the E3 program.

Each intern receives a monthly living allowance of CHF 1800 to cover accommodation and living expenses in Switzerland.

Additionally, travel costs may be reimbursed, and visa expenses can be partially covered by the host lab.

E3 interns can choose up to three preferred research domains from more than 60 areas, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Robotics and Autonomous Systems
  • Photonics and Quantum Computing
  • Bioengineering and Biomaterials
  • Energy and Sustainability
  • Data Science and Computational Engineering
  • Nanotechnology and Semiconductor Materials

Over 100 EPFL laboratories are open to hosting E3 participants. Applicants are encouraged to identify up to three host labs that match their academic and research interests.

To be eligible for the E3 Internship 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program at the time of application and during the internship.
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies by the time of application.
  • Students pursuing a PhD degree are not eligible.
  • Be among the top 10% of their class with an excellent GPA.
  • Have a strong motivation to pursue research or PhD studies.
  • Demonstrate prior research or lab experience (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Exhibit strong communication skills and proficiency in English.

Students from all countries are eligible to apply. However, candidates from specific institutions in the USA, Canada, and Singapore should apply for the EPFL Excellence Research Internship Program instead of E3.

To apply for the EPFL E3 Internship Program 2026, you will need the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) – maximum 5 MB (PDF format)
  • Academic transcripts – both original and translated (if not in English or French)
  • Motivation Letter / Statement of Purpose – explaining your research goals and lab preferences
  • Passport or National ID Scan
  • Recommendation Letters (optional) – can be uploaded as additional attachments

During the application process, candidates must indicate:

  • Up to three research domains of interest
  • Up to three preferred EPFL host laboratories (optional)

Selection Process

  • The E3 program is highly competitive. Once the portal closes, host labs will review applications and may invite shortlisted candidates for online interviews between November 2025 and March 2026.

Selection is based on:

  • Motivation and quality of the statement of purpose
  • Relevant research experience or potential
  • Alignment between candidate interests and host lab projects

Final decisions will be announced by mid-March 2026 via email.
