Over 20 Teachers and Invigilators May Be Dismissed Over WASSCE Malpractices

More than twenty teachers and invigilators implicated in examination malpractices during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) risk dismissal by the end of this month, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed.

Speaking exclusively to 3news’ Labour Affairs Correspondent in Accra on September 9, Public Relations Officer of GES, Daniel Fenyi, revealed that investigations have uncovered widespread breaches involving educators who accepted bribes in order to compromise the integrity of the exams.

“We will investigate first. Once you’re caught — and even some of the people we’ve invited have admitted themselves — they engaged in malpractice,” Fenyi stated. “Some of them took as low as 60 Ghana cedis a day. Others took 100 or 200 cedis. In some cases, students contributed as much as 500 cedis, which was then shared among teachers and invigilators.”

He added that the acts were reported across multiple examination centres, with some schools allegedly facilitating the misconduct.

According to the GES, all individuals found guilty at the conclusion of the investigations will be sanctioned, with dismissal being a likely outcome by September 30, 2025.

The revelations have sparked concern within the teaching fraternity. The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah, expressed disappointment over the situation, urging teachers to uphold the ethics of the profession.

“Don’t allow anybody to use your hand to catch a snake,” Musah cautioned. “Because a snake is poisonous. That’s what I can tell the teachers — be mindful of what you’re doing because it will compromise your integrity.”

In a related development, the GES has called on parents and candidates reviewing their BECE placement information to remain calm. According to the Service, no changes have been made to school choices in the placement portal.

“Where we sit now, our computers and systems cannot change [placement data],” Fenyi clarified. “So if you find any change to the choices that you made, it’s likely it’s not coming from us.”

The Ghana Education Service says it remains committed to ensuring transparency and fairness in Ghana’s education and examination processes and has vowed to hold accountable anyone who undermines its credibility.
