Obrachire SHS Student Hospitalised After Assault at District Games.
The District Schools Athletics Games, organised to promote youth talent and sportsmanship, turned violent after a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School was assaulted by students of the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
According to Citi FM Central Regional Correspondent Akwasi Addo, the incident occurred in Agona Swedru on Thursday, February 19, when students of the two schools clashed.
During the confrontation, a student of Obrachire was attacked by a group of SWESBUS students, who allegedly pelted him with stones and beat him with sticks.
Videos circulating on social media show the student being violently assaulted before he was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
A teacher at Obrachire confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police, who have commenced investigations.
The incident adds to a worrying trend of violence during inter-school sporting activities. In a recent case, a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed during the Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival.
Similarly, Nkawie Senior High Technical School has been handed a two-year ban from all extracurricular activities within the Ashanti Region following misconduct during the Inter-Schools Athletics competition at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The school is barred from participating in external sporting events, as well as Student Representative Council (SRC) and cadet activities, until 2028.
The sanction was imposed by the Ghana Education Service after investigations found the school culpable of initiating attacks on Osei Tutu Senior High School, Kumasi Technical Institute, and Aduman Senior High School during the competition.
