FDA shuts down popular Waakye joint in Takoradi over maggot-infested chicken.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Western Region has closed down a popular Waakye joint in Sekondi-Takoradi after it was found serving unsafe food to customers.
The action followed a complaint from a distressed customer who alleged being served maggot-infested chicken.
An inspection by FDA officials confirmed the report, revealing filthy surroundings and unhygienic food handling practices at the facility.
In response, the FDA, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Environmental Health Department, has launched a major exercise to clamp down on street food vendors operating without certification.
Western Regional FDA Director, Dr. Martin Kusi, stressed that strict enforcement is crucial since a majority of Ghanaians rely on roadside meals daily.

“The Street Food Vendor Permit, introduced in 2022 under the Public Health Act (Act 851), is mandatory for all roadside and mobile food operators, including kenkey sellers, waakye vendors, and fried yam joints,” Dr. Kusi explained.
He urged vendors to regularize their operations immediately to safeguard public health.
Metropolitan Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Daniel Lamptey, warned that the Assembly, together with the FDA, will not hesitate to prosecute offenders.
“We have done education on food safety for years. We are now moving to prosecution. Anyone who fails to comply risks fines or up to three months’ imprisonment,” he said.
The FDA says it will continue engaging food vendors while intensifying inspections to ensure only safe, wholesome food reaches the public.
