Teachers must uphold integrity, and parents must rejoin the effort.

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has condemned recent acts of indiscipline and violence against teachers, urging the teaching community to uphold integrity and professionalism while calling for stronger collaboration through the revival of Parent-Teacher Associations.

Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, the Vice President said the restoration of active Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) would strengthen collaboration between schools and homes and promote shared responsibility in nurturing the country’s future leaders.

Her remarks come in the wake of disturbing viral videos involving teachers accused of misconduct, including an alleged sexual harassment case involving an Assistant Headteacher of KNUST Senior High School and another incident at Okadjakrom Senior High Technical School. The incidents have sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability and ethics in the education sector.

“I also use this opportunity to condemn all forms of indiscipline and violence against teachers and equally urge teachers to uphold integrity and professionalism,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said. “The revival of Parent-Teacher Associations will strengthen collaboration and promote shared responsibility in education.”

The event, organised by the National Teaching Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, was held under the theme “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education.”

The Vice President, who was joined by senior government officials, including the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, said teachers remain central to the government’s efforts to reset and strengthen Ghana’s education system.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving teacher welfare, citing initiatives such as the Teacher Dabrɛ programme, aimed at providing better accommodation for teachers in rural areas, and a new Digital Training Programme to enhance teachers’ digital literacy. She also emphasised the need for continuous mental health support and capacity building for educators.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang lauded all teachers for their dedication and congratulated the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize winners, giving special mention to Richard Tiimob of Savelugu Senior High School, who was named the Most Outstanding Teacher.

“Teachers remain the architects of our nation’s future. Their work is as noble and essential as any other profession,” she said.
