35 suspects, including 19 teachers, face court over 2025 WASSCE malpractices.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has intensified its crackdown on examination malpractice, with 35 individuals, including 19 teachers, identified for engaging in acts that compromised the integrity of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to a statement issued on November 29, 2025, the Council revealed that investigations into various irregularities led to widespread sanctions and several criminal prosecutions.

WAEC disclosed that “a total of 35 persons, 19 of whom are teachers, were found to have engaged in acts that compromised the integrity of the examination.”

It added that investigations were completed and reviewed by the Ghana Examinations Committee at its 40th meeting on November 17, 2025.

“So far, 19 of them have been arraigned before the court and have been convicted to fines or terms of imprisonment,” the statement said.

The remaining 16 suspects are yet to be presented before the courts by the police.

The Council noted that beyond the court decisions, “the list of teachers will be presented to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service for further disciplinary action,” signaling a possible wave of professional sanctions against implicated educators.

The crackdown also led to the cancellation of thousands of results. WAEC said the subject results of 6,295 candidates were cancelled “for bringing foreign material like prepared notes, textbooks, and printed material into the examination halls.” In comparison, the entire results of 653 candidates were cancelled for possessing mobile phones during the exam.

In addition, the subject results of 908 candidates and the entire results of 158 candidates have been withheld pending further investigations.

WAEC also confirmed that alleged collusion cases involving candidates from 185 schools are under review.

“We are working around the clock to ensure that the withheld results… are published before the end of December 2025, depending on the outcome of investigations,” the Council said.

The Council stressed that it remains committed to protecting the credibility of the WASSCE amid growing concerns over sophisticated cheating tactics, including digital devices and coordinated collusion networks.

It also cautioned stakeholders to be vigilant against fraudsters who promise to alter grades for a fee, emphasizing that WAEC results “are secured and can be authenticated using its results verification system.”

WAEC expressed appreciation to institutions that supported the conduct of the 2025 examination, including security agencies, which contributed to arresting suspects involved in exam fraud.
